Welcome to Bais Hagivos!
Starbucks chairman Howard Schultz once described the "Starbucks Phenomenon" in this way:
“Starbucks has become what I call the third place. The first place is home. The second place is work. We are the place in between. It’s a place to feel comfort. A place to feel safe. A place to feel like you belong.”
Bais Hagivos shares a similar vision: Creating a “spiritual third space.”
Judaism is typically explored and experienced in two places: home and/or synagogue.
Bais Hagivos was founded to create a religious space of prayer, study, and worship, less formal than the traditional synagogue and a bit more structured than the home. It is the "spiritual third space” for the exploring Jewish soul and for worship and activity - in support of the local Jewish community.
The Torah describes a climactic battle between the forces of good and evil; the Jewish nation versus Amalek.
"וַיֹּאמֶר מֹשֶׁה אֶל יְהוֹשֻׁעַ בְּחַר לָנוּ אֲנָשִׁים וְצֵא הִלָּחֵם בַּעֲמָלֵק מָחָר אָנֹכִי נִצָּב עַל רֹאשׁ הַגִּבְעָה וּמַטֵּה הָאֱלֹהִים בְּיָדִי."
"So Moses said to Joshua, Pick men for us, and go out and fight against Amalek. Tomorrow I will stand on top of the hill with the staff of God in my hand."Shemos/Exodus 17:9Moshe went atop the hill from where the Jewish people can see him and his staff - and remember their creator, Hashem.
Bais Hagivos, the House of the Hills, is a space for Jews to reconnect with each other, their purpose, and their creator.
Hope to see you soon!
